He was the illegitimate son of satirical novelist Carl Ewald and feminist activist and writer Agnes Henningsen. \u003c\/span\u003eHe studied at the Frederiksberg Technical School from 1911 to 1914, then at the Copenhagen Technical College until 1917. He worked as an architect and journalist at the beginning of his career, but quickly developed a passion for lighting design. He drew his inspiration from a new technology: the electric light bulb. His approach to lighting was almost scientific, and he investigated the impact of diffuse, soft light on our well-being. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"\u003eIn 1925, Henningsen began a permanent collaboration with\u003c\/span\u003e \u003ca style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pamono.fr\/makers\/louis-poulsen\"\u003eLouis Poulsen\u003c\/a\u003e, \u003cspan style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"\u003ethe Copenhagen-based lighting manufacturer. He produced more than 100 lamp models for them, all part of the PH series and based on the same concept: multiple shades and diffusers to produce warm, soft light. At the beginning of World War I, Henningsen was the chief architect of Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. However, under German occupation, he was forced to leave Denmark for Sweden.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"\u003eAmong his most famous works are the PH Snowball (1958), a pendant lamp with eight aluminum shades, and the PH Artichoke (1957), a pendant lamp with a bulb surrounded by scales to reflect light. Both pieces are emblematic examples of modernist Scandinavian design.
