Napoleon III period.

In 1839, Barbedienne founded the company where he produced a large number of sculpted works, preserved in European museums, in bronze and in reduction, to adorn modern interiors. The chosen themes were often allegorical and drew heavily from the antique repertoire. He also contracted with contemporary sculptors such as Carrier-Belleuse, Barye, Fremiet, Gardet, Mène, Chapu, Fabio Stecchi, and Eugène Aizelin to publish their works, and created numerous models of bronze furnishings, enamels, cloisonné, and wood high and low reliefs, etc.

Having no children, his nephew and successor, Gustave Leblanc-Barbedienne, developed the foundry by specializing in monumental bronzes. In 1893, a presidential decree issued by Sadi Carnot authorized Gustave Leblanc to thenceforth be called Gustave Leblanc-Barbedienne. The workshops were located on rue de Lancry in the 10th arrondissement of Paris. In France, many war memorials are signed Leblanc-Barbedienne.

The quality of the casting, chasing, and patina, characteristic of Barbedienne's technique, gradually led to the founder's signature gaining importance. Thanks especially to Ferdinand Barbedienne, the relationship between sculptor and founder became analogous to the relationship between composer and performer in music.
