Some works transcend the simple status of a collector's item to become true witnesses of history. This spectacular model of the battleship Friedland, made on an impressive scale, belongs to this rare category.
With its 151 cm in length and 107 cm in height, it offers an exceptional presence and immediately catches the eye. Through its extraordinary dimensions, remarkable level of detail, and quality of execution, it evokes the large arsenal models once intended for naval schools, museums, or maritime institutions.
A symbol of the French Navy
Built at the Lorient arsenal, the Friedland was launched on October 25, 1873, before entering service in 1876. It represents a major step in the evolution of the French military navy, at a time when large battleships still combined the power of steam with the elegance of three-masted ships.
Nearly 97 meters long, displacing 8,850 tons, equipped with 8 boilers, an engine developing 4,458 horsepower, and carrying over 2,000 m² of sail, the Friedland perfectly illustrates this pivotal period between traditional naval power and the industrial revolution.
The ship participated in the Tunisia operations in 1881, notably during the capture of the port of Sfax, before being placed in reserve and then permanently withdrawn from service in 1902.
The famous writer and naval officer Pierre Loti served aboard it between 1880 and 1881, during which time he wrote several stories inspired by this naval campaign.

Its exceptional length gives it a presence worthy of major maritime collections.
