Robert Picault was born in Paris. After studying ceramics at the École des Arts Appliqués in Paris, he moved to Vallauris at the end of World War II. There, he founded Atelier Callis with Roger Capron in 1946. Two years later, he established his own pottery workshop on Chemin du Fournas in the village. He was a friend, colleague, and neighbor of Pablo Picasso, and the two men learned from each other in aspects of their respective specialties. Robert Picault was also an accomplished filmmaker and photographer, and made a series of four short films with Picasso and 1950s showbiz personalities. He used copper oxide and iron oxide in his glazes, and most of his work is characterized by green and brown geometric patterns made of crosses and knots, bands and waves.
