About the painter:

Fernand Laval (1886-1966) arrived in Paris in 1912 where he befriended Maurice Utrillo and walked the streets of Montmartre with his easel. In 1913 he married Rachel Cohen and in 1920 he made his first appearance at the Salon d'Automne where he presented a painting titled ''From Montmartre to Les Halles''. He also worked abroad, notably in the Netherlands, painting many windmills in the years 1927-28, and he traveled to Belgium, where he painted the port of Antwerp. In homage to Renoir in 1963 he painted RENOIR's house ''la Collette'' in Cagnes-sur-Mer. His favorite subjects always remained the heart of Paris, Montmartre, including the Sacré-Cœur, the suburbs of Paris, the old fortifications, and the Canal St Martin. After his death, he fell into oblivion, but in 1988 an interest in his work, especially his paintings depicting Montmartre, began to sell for around $7,000 in auction houses, both in England and the United States.
