This painting depicts a street in Périgueux, "la maison des quais" in 1956.

On the quays, at the corner of the Pont des Barris, a beautiful Renaissance ensemble (15th-17th century) is reflected in the water: the Maisons des Quais. They notably comprise the Brogliodie house (15th century, also known as the "Maison des Consuls" and recognizable by its machicolations and elaborate dormer windows) and the Lambert house, also from the 16th century, which is distinguished by its wooden galleries supported by slender columns.

The artist painted this work in an Impressionistic style with brushstrokes of dark brown tones.

Fernand Laval (1886-1966) arrived in Paris in 1912 where he befriended Maurice Utrillo and walked the streets of Montmartre with his easel. In 1913 he married Rachel Cohenet and in 1920 he made his first appearance at the Salon d'Automne where he presented a painting titled "De Montmartre aux Halles". He also worked abroad, notably in the Netherlands, painting numerous windmills in the years 1927-28, and he traveled to Belgium, where he painted the port of Antwerp. In homage to Renoir in 1963, he painted RENOIR's house "la Collette" in Cagnes-sur-Mer. His favorite subjects always remained the heart of Paris, Montmartre, including Sacré-Cœur, the Parisian suburbs, the old fortifications, and the Canal St Martin. Following his death, he fell into oblivion, but in 1988, interest in his work, especially his paintings depicting Montmartre, led to them selling for around $7,000 in auction houses, both in England and the United States. His last works are in dark tones of browns, earths, and blacks, including the one we are offering, dating from the 1950s.
