Born around 1863, during the heart of the Napoleon III era, this fireproof safe is a creation of the prestigious Bauche company, established in Gueux, Marne. Designed to protect jewelry, titles, and valuable documents in aristocratic homes, it comes from a château, where it has withstood over a century and a half with the quiet strength of pieces forged to last.

The original plate bears the inscription:
"Incombustible – Système Bauche – Breveté S.G.D.G. – Usine à Gueux (Marne)",
attesting to its authenticity and its importance in the history of early French security technologies.

Superb Napoleon III charm: old riveting

This safe is entirely assembled using the hot riveting technique, predating any modern welding.
Each rivet, domed and regular, fastens the steel plates into a true small metallic fortress.

Before the advent of electric welding in the 20th century, riveting was the noble method used for train stations, bridges, steam engines, and metal frameworks.
This assembly method gives the object a unique presence:
a rhythm, a texture, an industrial relief that captures the entire aesthetic of the second half of the 19th century.
